It's key to note here that removing the original drive is not what caused data to be removed. If you remove the old file location from your backup selection, it is telling CrashPlan that you no longer want to keep that old location backed up. CrashPlan's De-duplication means it doesn't have to re-upload in the new location, however. It's saying "Keep this backed up."ĬrashPlan identifies files by their full file path, so when you move a file, CrashPlan sees it as having a separate file history at each location. Adding files to this selection will back up the files, while removing files will also remove them from from your backup archive. By default, this is your home folder, but by clicking "Change" you can add other folders or external drives to it. The way a user tells CrashPlan that he/she wants data backed up is through the file selection. I'd like to discuss why this happened and how you or others could prevent it from happening in the future. Unfortunately, if the support agents have confirmed that the data was removed from your archive, It is gone. You will most likely lose all historical revisions and deleted files. So, take caution when migrating data to other drives or changing drive letters. In other words, my 2 years of backups pretty much reset.Īfter arguing with their tech support multiple times, that's pretty much how it is. While Crashplan quickly resynced all the data, it conveniently removed all deleted and older files related to that data. However, recently I moved a few hundred gigs of data from one drive to another and removed the original drive. On several occasions, I've gone back to retrieve a deleted file or an older revision of a file. I'm a huge fan of the "never delete" option. I 100% agree with it currently being the best option out there compared to other competitors like Backblaze or Carbonite, but I recently found my first serious complaint with them. I see a lot of talk about backup solutions and Crashplan being mentioned. Long time reader of r/photography but new to posting.
